Unplugging a USB drive causes a blue screen

A client of mine said he had a new computer with the 64 bit version of Windows Vista. Everything was Ok, but now whenever he removes his USB drive he gets a Windows blue screen error. I suggested that he try another USB drive and see if the same thing happens because it could be the USB drive was defective. So much for my wisdom, the next day I get this back:

"Lots of people are complaining that their 64 bit Vista machines just started crashing whenever a USB device was unplugged.  This problem was traced back to some automatic updates that came in on Aug 25.  Specifically, the update was KB973879.  I located that update and deleted it this morning, and the problem no longer exists--so far, so good."

I looked it up and he was right!
